Need to protect disabled gay people: MP

A Sydney MP will move an amendment in NSW parliament to ensure religiously affiliated disability care providers cannot discriminate against gay people.

An Independent NSW MP will move to ensure gay, transgender and lesbian people with disabilities are not subjected to discrimination from religiously-aligned service providers.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme Enabling Bill is currently before state parliament and if passed will see the transfer of disability services, assets and employment to the non-government sector.

The move has aroused some concern with Sydney MP Alex Greenwich.

Mr Greenwich says religiously-affiliated disability care providers are exempt from the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act.

He believes this will leave the door open for religiously aligned providers to unfairly treat gay, lesbian or transgender people with disabilities or employees.

"The NDIS is designed to provide people with a disability with a greater choice of services: gay, lesbian and transgender people with a disability should have the same choices as everyone else and not be treated as second class citizens," he said in a statement.

"My amendment also ensures people with a disability, who have a gay disability worker, will have continuity of care and a new religiously affiliated provider can't deny a gay disability worker a job".

Mr Greenwich will introduce an amendment to the NDIS Enabling Bill in the NSW Parliament this week.
