The official death toll in Nepal now stands at more than 2,500, as rescuers dig through rubble in the devastated capital Kathmandu.

Tom White from the Fred Hollows Foundation is at Dhulikhhel hospital, 30 kilometres from Kathmandu, says medical workers are working tirelessly to meet the demand.

"All of the wards are full of people, waiting for treatment," he said.

"The surgical teams have been working around the clock and have many more surgeries to go, and many people are still arriving at the hospital after spending more than 24 hours walking from remote villages and carrying people with very severe injuries."

Mr White says hospitals are in urgent need of medical supplies as well as electricity.

"There is no mains power in the town at all, and so they're running on back-up generators. The other real requirement here is things such as diesel fuel and generators."
