Nerves again grip Aussie diving gun

Australian diving young gun Maddison Keeney appears to have again fallen victim to nerves, finishing last in the 1m world titles final in Russia.

Nerves again look to have gotten the better of Australian diving hope Maddison Keeney at the world titles in Russia.

Keeney's teammate and Commonwealth 3m champion Esther Qin (280.50 points) claimed an impressive fifth placing in the women's one-metre platform final at Kazan on Tuesday.

Italy's Tania Cagnotto took gold (310.85), snapping China's run of five straight wins at the 2015 titles.

However, the stage was set for teenager Keeney to make a splash in the final with just one dive left.

Sitting in fourth spot, the 19-year-old Keeney looked to have saved her best for last, with her fifth and final dive carrying a superior 3.2 degree of difficulty.

Nailing it would have propelled her towards the podium.

But the Kiwi-born hope baulked and all but fell off the platform, failing to register a score and relegating her to last in the 12-strong quality field (226.05).

It was almost a carbon copy of Keeney's 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games effort.

Keeney looked primed for 1m gold in Scotland, only to baulk on the platform before her second-last dive, costing her a two point deduction and relegating her to silver.

Earlier, Australia's Grant Nel and young gun James Connor placed 10th in the 3m synchro heats (384.87) to scrape into Tuesday night's 12-strong final behind pace setters Evgenii Kuznetsov and Ilia Zakharov (448.68) of Russia.
