Networks await budget TV licence decision

Media reports suggest the federal government is likely to reduce the TV licence fee rather than abolish it in next week's budget.

Australia's free-to-air commercial television networks are waiting to learn the result of their lobbying on licence fees amid reports the government will slash them in next week's budget.

The broadcasters have long been unhappy with the requirement they pay 4.5 per cent of their revenues in licence fees, but the government is likely to reduce the fee rather than abolish it, the Australian newspaper reported on Friday.

"We do not know what the decision is. We've made a very strong case to the government that these fees are exorbitant by any measure and we are waiting to hear what the government has decided to do," a Ten Network spokesman said.
