US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have enjoyed a traditional Bavarian breakfast of soft pretzels, white sausages and beer in the small Alpine village of Kruen ahead of the Group of Seven summit.

Obama told Kruen locals seated for the breakfast that "there is never a bad day for a beer and a weisswurst."

After being warmly welcomed with cheers and applause, Obama joked that he regretted forgetting his lederhosen but said "hopefully I'll have the opportunity to buy some here."

Marking his fourth visit to Germany, Obama calls Chancellor Angela Merkel, who is standing by the president's side, a "great friend and partner."

Obama ended his speech with final request of Merkel: "We should have all our summit meetings in this incredible village and drink beer ... but I think we will have to negotiate with the security people."

Obama then tucked into a plate of white sausages while taking swigs of beer, which may or may not have been non-alcoholic.

Merkel's husband, Joachim Sauer, also gave the US president a lesson in how to slice a sausage - in proper Bavarian style.
