New $1 coin displays spirit of Anzac

A new $1 coin has been released to mark the centenary of the start of the first World War.

The new Anzac centenary $1 coin has been unveiled with the first glistening examples presented to a group of Victorian primary school children visiting parliament house.

"The Centenary of Anzac will be one of the most defining moments in our nation's story and the creation of a coin is a permanent way to reflect on and remember this commemorative period," Veterans Affairs Minister Michael Ronaldson said in a statement.

Twenty-three million of the coins will go into circulation.

Parliamentary secretary to the treasurer Steve Ciobo said every time someone looks at the coin it will remind them of the service and sacrifice of our past and present Australian Defence Force members.

The coin features an Australian soldier with head bowed and the words "100 years of Anzac - the Spirit Lives".
