New $5 'wattle' banknote arrives September

Australia's new five dollar banknote, to be released in September, will have native wattle designs and a 'tactile' feature to help the vision impaired.

Australia's new five dollar note will feature native wattle, and could be in your wallet in less than seven months.

The first of the nation's next generation of banknotes will be released on National Wattle Day, September 1.

Reserve Bank of Australia governor Glenn Stevens said the notes will have a range of new security features and the designs will have different species of Australian wattle on each denomination.

"The new series will also include a `tactile' feature to help the vision-impaired community distinguish between different denominations of banknotes," he said.

While the updated notes will have a "fresh, modern feel", they'll retain the same colour, size and people portrayed on each denomination.

"The public will recognise the new banknotes," Mr Stevens said.

The release marks the 50th anniversary year of Australia's conversion to the decimal currency system, switching to dollars and cents from pounds, shillings and pence.

Several high-profile Australians have recently joined a petition to put the face of ground-breaking eye surgeon Fred Hollows on the new five dollar note.

Former prime minister Bob Hawke, Olympian Cathy Freeman and Dr Hollows' widow Gabi gathered at Sydney Opera House last month to launch the "Get Fred on the Fiver" campaign.

Dr Hollows died more than 20 years ago, but his foundation has restored the sight of more than two million people worldwide.

Full details of the design will be revealed in the middle of the year.
