New AFL player loses licence

Carlton's Charlie Curnow has lost his licence for two years after pleading guilty on Monday to drink-driving charges.

Charlie Curnow's disastrous drink driving incident has cost the new AFL player his licence for two years and a $4000 fine.

Curnow appeared in the Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday and pleaded guilty to all charges.

The 18-year-old refused to take a breath test and was arrested the week before last November's national draft.

Within hours, Curnow had apologised for the incident.

Carlton still recruited Curnow with pick No.18 in the draft.

He again apologised on Friday, with Carlton calling it an uncharacteristic error of judgment.

"I know I made a horrible mistake and it's something I deeply regret," he said in a club statement.

"The court ruling today is a life lesson I will never forget.

"I messed up, I've let a lot of people down and it's on me to show to my family, my club and my teammates it was a one-off."

Blues football manager Andrew McKay said the club had given their players more education about alcohol.

When we committed to Charlie on draft night we knew we were getting a good person who had made a poor error of judgment," he said.

Over the pre-season we have taken a proactive approach in providing not only Charlie, but our entire playing group further education and training on alcohol consumption.

It is an important issue and we will continue to educate all our players.

Curnow is the younger brother of Carlton player Ed.
