New Australian reptile discovered

Finding a reptile in an unexpected place isn't something many would rejoice, but scientists in western Australia couldn't be more delighted.

The discovery of 'Pokey', the Dampier Peninsula Goanna, in the remote Kimberley region, has been hailed a win for Australia's biodiversity.

Paul Doughty, curator of reptiles at the Western Australian Museum in Perth, welcomed the finding.

"We've just broken a thousand species of reptile in Australia, which is a tenth of the world's diversity," he said.

Experts say genetic information suggests the Dampier Peninsula Goanna has remained unchanged for more than six million years, when it diverged from its last known relative.
