New choral work inspired by street violence debuts

Jonathon Welch's "Choir of Hard Knocks" became a celebrated musical tribute to the homeless and disadvantaged. Now, the Melbourne composer has turned his attention to victims of street violence around the world.

It's the culmination of a year-long international collaboration between Jonathon Welch and fellow composers Kathleen McGuire and Andy Payne.

The trio's "Street Requiem" is inspired by the rising tide of everyday violence.

"I just thought there was an opportunity to write something to remember those people who died, the nameless or innocent on our streets,” says Mr Welch.

Using a variety of languages and musical forms, the requiem draws on a variety of musical influences and historical experiences.

The fifty-minute piece debuted on Saturday at Melbourne's recital centre with three hundred and fifty voices from choirs across the country.

“It’s about giving people an opportunity to reflect but also to celebrate as well,” says Mr Welch.

Jonathon Welch and his collaborators will take their requiem around the world later this year.
