New Crows coach says he has to perform

New Adelaide Crows coach Phil Walsh says his job now is to perform as prepares for his first AFL premiership game in charge of a club.

New Adelaide coach Phil Walsh says he's no different to his AFL players: he now has to perform.

Walsh has been an assistant coach for nearly two decades but steps into the head coach role for the first time in a premiership game on Sunday when the Crows host North Melbourne.

"I'm excited in footy all the time, it's what I like to do," Walsh told reporters on Thursday.

"Round one, it has been a long wait.

"But it's now time to perform so I'm looking to perform - coaches need to perform, just like players."

Walsh baulked at describing himself as excited about his first game in charge for premiership points.

"This is what I do, I'm very comfortable with it," he said.

"I'm probably not excited because I know it's a long season - if you put all your efforts just into round one you will be very short-sighted.

"I have been in the coaches box for a very long period of time as an assistant coach.

"I understand my role as a senior coach and I'm very much looking forward to it."
