New Games high for golden Scots

After setting a new gold medal record, Team Scotland wants to surpass its biggest ever medal haul.

Team Scotland is celebrating after breaking its previous Commonwealth Games record to clinch 12 gold medals.

Victory for Alex Marshall and Paul Foster in lawn bowls at Kelvingrove in Glasgow on Monday pushed the tally past the 11 won in Melbourne in 2006.

With six days to go in the competition, the host nation needs three more medals to beat its overall medal record of 33, set in Edinburgh in 1986.

Scotland's athletes have so far earned 12 gold, eight silver and eleven bronze medals. They sit third in the medal table behind Australia and England.

Mike Whittingham, from the sportscotland institute of sport, said he was delighted.

"Alex and Paul have dominated world bowls over the last few years and to add another Commonwealth title to their collection, especially one as historic as this, is extremely fitting," he said.

Judo has earned Scotland the most medals so far, with gold winners including team flag bearer Euan Burton and sisters Louise and Kimberley Renicks.
