New group of refugees on Nauru

The Nauruan government has granted refugee status to 13 more people, including members from two families.

Members of two families are among the latest group of asylum seekers to be granted refugee status by the island republic Nauru.

The Nauruan government on Thursday announced that 13 people - five from two families and eight single men - from Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan will be allowed to remain on the island after consideration of their homeland circumstances.

In the latest round two single men had their bids for refugee status rejected.

The new refugees will move into permanent accommodation and be able to seek employment in the local community.

More refugee status announcements are due to be made by Nauru in coming weeks.
