Housing sector growth looks set to continue after a rebound in new home sales in August.

Housing Industry Association data shows new home sales rose 2.3 per cent in August, after a decline of 0.4 per cent in July.

Detached house sales rose 3.5 per cent in August, with increases in four of the five mainland states. However, multi-unit sales fell 1.7 per cent.

"It is becoming increasingly apparent that total sales activity has already peaked this year, but today's update shows that sales are remaining elevated," HIA economist Diwa Hopkins said.

She expects total housing starts to remain elevated this year, but still lower from the peak level in the 2014/15 financial year.
