Scientists say hundreds of thousands of lives a year, many of them children, may be saved with the latest development of a malaria vaccine in Australia.
Most people affected by the disease live in tropical areas of the world, with most cases occuring in parts of Africa and Asia, such as the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea.
Griffith University in Queensland has developed a vaccination that is imminently set to be tested on humans around Australia and then internationally.
A number of malaria vaccinations have been invented to date, however this particular vaccine is credited with being the most effective so far.
Professor James McCarthy from the Queensland Institute of Medical Research told Aileen Phillips it's the best opportunity yet for developing countries to tackle this deadly disease.
