Governor-General Peter Cosgrove has sworn in a trio of Nationals to their new ministerial roles.

Darren Chester and Keith Pitt have been returned to the Turnbull government frontbench after Michael McCormack's Nationals leadership win, less than three months after they were dropped.

Mr Chester lost his job after former leader Barnaby Joyce took on the transport and infrastructure portfolios late last year and will now be veterans affairs minister.

Mr Pitt will be assistant minister to the deputy prime minister, while Mark Coulton also joins the front bench as assistant trade and tourism minister.

They were sworn in at Government House in Canberra on Monday.

Fellow Nationals MPs Damian Drum and Luke Hartsukyer returned to the government's back bench in the mini-reshuffle, which was prompted by Mr Joyce's resignation from the party's leadership.

He stood down last month following sexual harassment allegations and two weeks of scandal after his affair with a staffer, who is now pregnant, was revealed.
