New technology for the hard of hearing

Deaf, hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired Australians now have improved access to mobile phone and online communication.

Deaf, the hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired Australians now have improved access to mobile phone and online communication through new technology launched by the National Relay Service.

Until now, phone communication for the hearing and speech impaired has been limited to land lines.

The new service enables SMS, video and captioned relay, giving users more flexibility in the way they communicate.

National Relay Service managing director of outreach Deborah Fullwood told Andi Yu how it works.
