New technology to locate triple-zero calls

Police, firefighters and paramedics will get automatic information about the location of triple-zero calls from mobile phones.

Emergency services will receive automatic information on the whereabouts of people who call triple-zero from mobile phones.

The calls will be pinpointed via their proximity to nearby cell towers following the introduction of new technology by telcos.

At present, police, firefighters and paramedics cannot access such information automatically.

Instead, they rely on the words of callers, which can be a problem when they do not know where they are or cannot talk.

The technology should reduce emergency response times, John Stanton, chief of telco body the Communications Alliance, said.

But he cautioned that the information was approximate and would vary depending on the number of nearby towers and the nature of the surrounding terrain.

The capability will be introduced to emergency services over nine months.
