New umpire jerseys bring diversity to AFL

For the first time in AFL history the word 'umpire' will be translated on umpire jerseys for the 2015 AFL Multicultural round to take place in August.

The word `umpire' will be translated into seven languages on AFL umpires' jerseys in the name of multiculturalism.

The AFL's multicultural program tweeted an image on Wednesday showing new jersey designs featuring both Mandarin characters and Arabic script that will feature during this season's multicultural round.

Other languages to be displayed include Greek, Hindi, Vietnamese, Italian and Spanish.

During the special event each language will be connected to one of seven games (see below) with the language's culture reflected as a theme within the match's venue.

Alongside the jerseys, footballs will have the Sherrin logo translated into Arabic, Hindi and Mandarin and at the 50m line a special design will feature with the word `fifty' translated into the game's corresponding language.

All matches will also be broadcast in the language of the game's theme via AFL.com.au and the official AFL Live app.

The multicultural round is round 19 from August 7-9.

Greek: Adelaide v Richmond (Adelaide Oval)

Hindi: Collingwood v Carlton (MCG) and St Kilda v Fremantle (Etihad Stadium)

Mandarin: Western Bulldogs v Port Adelaide (Etihad Stadium) and Melbourne v North Melbourne (MCG)

Vietnamese: Brisbane Lions v Gold Coast (Gabba)

Italian: West Coast v Hawthorn (Domain Stadium)

Spanish: Geelong v Sydney Swans (Simonds Stadium)

Arabic: GWS v Essendon (Spotless Stadium)
