New version of old-look ferries for Sydney

A Hobart shipbuilder has won the contract to supply six new Sydney ferries which will be based on a traditional design but boast the latest technology.

Six new ferries servicing Sydney's inner harbour will have all the the latest communications mod cons desired by tech savvy commuters.

Hobart-based shipbuilder Incat has won the contract to supply the 35-metre vessels, each able to carry 400 passengers and furnished with more comfortable seating than current models.

For the first time commuters will have wi-fi access, real-time journey information as well as charging stations for electronic devices.

The twin-hull vessels will be phased in over two years, starting on routes to Watsons Bay, Cockatoo Island and Barangaroo wharf from next year.
