A woman has been treated in hospital for two stab wounds to her back, following a domestic dispute near Newcastle, police say.

Police and paramedics were called to a house in Wallsend about 6.40pm on Wednesday where they found a 48-year-old woman suffering stab wounds.

She was treated at the scene then taken to hospital where she remains after receiving stitches, a police statement said.

Detectives have spoken to a 42-year-old man, however, he was released without charge pending further investigations.

It is expected he will be served with an apprehended violence order on Thursday while investigations continue, police said.
