Newman promises to continue light rail

The Queensland Premier says a re-elected Liberal National Party will support the second stage of the Gold Coast light rail project.

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has promised a re-elected Liberal National Party will support the second stage of the Gold Coast light rail project.

The premier made the announcement at a LNP fundraising luncheon in Brisbane on Wednesday.

He told the crowd, who paid $250-a-head to attend, the pledge was part of a "landmark public transport resolution" in southeast Queensland.

"We will continue to work to get the costs down," Mr Newman said.

"(But) we are one hundred per cent committed to this ... as part of funding Queensland's future."

But he did not provide further details on the nature of that commitment.

Mr Newman also announced plans for new and upgraded "Park 'n' Rides" in Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, as part of a scheme to provide 5000 extra car spaces at southeast Queensland train stations and bus hubs over the next six years.

The LNP would also provide $295 million to make dangerous level crossings in Brisbane safer.

He also confirmed the government's $1 billion commitment to the underground BaT tunnel to boost services.

The suite of new funding adds to the LNP's already infrastructure-heavy election pitch, which also includes a plan for an inland alternative to the Bruce Highway, congestion reduction upgrades and the duplication of the Sunshine Coast rail line between Beerburrum and Landsborough.

Meanwhile, ALP leader Annastacia Palaszczuk has deflected criticism over her apparent lack of an infrastructure policy, claiming she needs to "look at the books" first.

A Labor government would devise an infrastructure plan after the election, she said.

Queenslanders head to the polls on Saturday.
