Hollywood star Olivia Newton-John wants two million Australian children to experience the joy of planting a tree.

The federal government will announce on Friday funding for the first 100,000 trees to be planted by Sydney schoolchildren for the One Tree Per Child campaign.

Co-founder Newton-John wants every child at school to plant a tree and has told ABC radio she hopes two million will be in the ground by 2020.
