Next steps in Aussie cricket pay saga

The deadline in discussions for a new pay deal has passed, with Cricket Australia and the players' union remaining deadlocked.

WHAT DOES THE LATEST CHAPTER OF AUSTRALIAN CRICKET'S PAY STOUSH MEAN?

*The contracts of approximately 230 players expire at midnight on Friday. They are all unemployed come Saturday

*The women's World Cup squad has been paid in advance of the ongoing tournament. The next series at risk of being affected is next month's Australia A tour of South Africa.

HOW DID IT GET THIS FAR?

*Cricket Australia (CA) and the Australian Cricketers' Association (ACA) have been deadlocked regarding the issue of revenue sharing. There has been no progress for months

*The governing body says the model that has governed players' salaries for 20 years is no longer viable. The union, backed vocally by David Warner and other stars, believes it must remain.

WHAT HAPPENS NOW?

*Players will meet in Sydney on Sunday to mull their next steps. Many of those currently overseas are expected to dial in to the conference

*The most pressing issue is the Australia A tour. Glenn Maxwell and Usman Khawaja headline the list of out-of-contract players who were meant to tour South Africa

*Players on multi-year state deals, who will continue to be paid, could agree to boycott the trip

*CA could also award tour contracts that ensure the Australia A trip goes ahead as planned.

COULD THIS SUMMER'S ASHES REALLY BE AFFECTED?

*Yes, if the impasse continues until November then Steve Smith headlines the list of players who will be unavailable for the first Test

*It's more likely CA and the ACA will come to some form of agreement, even if it's a stop-gap measure, before England arrive.
