Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has lost his appeal against a one-year doping ban for testing positive to marijuana.
The 23-year-old was found to have violated the NFL's substance-abuse policy after unsuccessfully arguing his failed test was the result of second-hand marijuana smoke.
The league said in a statement Gordon's "eligibility for reinstatement will be determined following the 2014 season."
Gordon was selected by Cleveland in the second round of the 2012 supplemental draft following a number of positive drug tests while playing US college football at Baylor and Utah.
He led the NFL with 1646 receiving yards last season but was suspended the first two games last year for failing a drug test.
Gordon claimed to have inadvertently ingested codeine contained in cough syrup.
