NFL Seahawk Sherman fined for "taunting"

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, whose post-match interview went viral, has been fined $7,875 for "taunting" San Francisco last week.

The National Football League slapped Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman with a nearly $US8,000 fine on Friday for "taunting" the San Francisco 49ers during the NFC championship game.

Sherman was assessed a 10-yard penalty near the end of Sunday's game for making a choking gesture toward the San Francisco sideline, which he said was directed at 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Sherman jumped to try and deflect Kaepernick's pass intended for Michael Crabtree in the end zone and it was intercepted by teammate Malcolm Smith, stopping a 49ers drive in the final minute and cementing Seattle's second trip to the Super Bowl.

The Seahawks will play the Denver Broncos in the NFL's championship showcase on February 2.

After reviewing the incident, the league's disciplinary committee decided to fine Sherman a total of $US7,875 for unsportsmanlike conduct and taunting.

After the game Sherman launched into a verbal tirade that went viral in which he slammed 49ers receiver Crabtree.
