NFL Steelers to stick with Aussie Wing

After a year of highs and lows the Pittsburgh Steelers are sticking with Melbourne-born NFL punter Brad Wing.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are taking another punt on Australia's Brad Wing.

There were calls from the NFL team's fans to give Wing the boot and sign a more consistent punter after a season of highs and lows.

The Steelers announced on Saturday they had re-signed Wing to a one-year contract extension.

Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Wing appeared in 16 regular season games for the Steelers in the 2014/15 season, had 61 punts for 2668 yards and his 43.7 yard average ranked fifth among rookie punters in Steelers' history.

But, for every brilliant play the 23-year-old made he also had a catastrophe.

Against the Baltimore Ravens in November he turned a failed field goal attempt by Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham into a two point conversion by passing the ball to tight end Matt Spaeth in the end zone.

The next month the Steelers looked to capitalise on Wing's arm against the Cincinnati Bengals and drew up a trick play with the Australian shaping up to punt, but then throwing a pass.

It was a disaster, with the Bengals easily intercepting a floating pass.

With the boot Wing was brilliant on occasions, but against the Tampa Buccaneers he shanked a punt for just 29 yards which ended in the Steelers losing 27-24.

Wing, whose father David was a punter who tried out for the Detroit Lions, played Australian rules in Melbourne before moving to the US for his final year of high school and then securing a scholarship with college powerhouse Louisiana State University.
