Carolina Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton has been ruled out of Sunday's NFL game against Tampa Bay after being injured in a two-car smash near the team's training facility.

Derek Anderson will start in place of the injured Newton, who suffered two transverse process fractures in his lower back on Tuesday.

He was released from hospital on Wednesday morning and will be re-evaluated next week.

Anderson started for Newton in the Panthers' win earlier this season over Tampa Bay.

Newton was dealing with a rib injury at the time and Anderson went 24-for-34 passing for 230 yards with two touchdowns in the 20-14 contest.
