Nile cites abortion-breast cancer research

Christian Democratic Party leader Fred Nile has cited "valid studies" linking abortion and breast cancer.

Christian Democratic Party leader Fred Nile has cited research that draws a link between abortion and breast cancer.

The NSW MP raised the issue during a budget estimates hearing on Thursday in a question to the state Minister for Women Pru Goward.

"In your opinion, should NSW women be warned about known risk factors for breast cancer, especially if those risks involve a lifestyle choice?" Rev Nile asked Ms Goward.

He went on to ask the minister if she was aware of research published in February looking at the link between induced abortion and breast cancer.

He claimed the researchers reviewed 36 recent peer-reviewed studies and found that "on average an induced abortion increases the risk of breast cancer by 44 per cent, two abortions increase the risk by 76 per cent and three, by 89 per cent".

"Will you ask your department to investigate this latest report ... and other recent valid studies, and consider informing NSW women about these significant findings?" he said.

Ms Goward said she would refer the question to Health Minister Jillian Skinner.

"Scientific information is always relevant," Ms Goward added.

"It needs to be considered seriously and that's what we'll do."

Senior federal minister Eric Abetz was earlier this month blasted by health and women's groups after citing studies "from the 1950s" linking abortion and breast cancer in a TV interview.

Senator Abetz, who was publicly rebuked by Prime Minister Tony Abbott for his comments, later said he was misrepresented and denied he believed there were any such links.

Comment has been sought from Rev Nile.
