Nine men, including well-known radical preacher Anjem Choudary, have been arrested in London as part of an investigation into alleged Islamist-related terrorism, police say.

They were arrested on suspicion of being members of a proscribed organisation, and encouraging terrorism. The organisation involved is the Islamist group Al-Muhajiroun, the Press Association reported.

Choudary headed the Britain-based group until it was banned in the country four years ago.

Police said they were also searching 18 properties in London and one in the central English city of Stoke-on-Trent. There was no "immediate public safety risk", police said.

Earlier this week, a 24-year-old Syrian was arrested at an airport near the Belgian city of Charleroi, on suspicion of belonging to a terrorist organisation, Belga news agency reported. A similar arrest was made at the same airport in early August, Belga said.
