Nine flee Sydney boarding house blaze

Nine residents have escaped from an early morning boarding house blaze in Sydney's inner west, which investigators are treating as suspicious.

Nine residents of a boarding house have been evacuated after a fire ripped through the building.

The blaze in Sydney's inner west is being treated as suspicious, Fire & Rescue NSW said.

Emergency crews were called to the large two-storey residence on Addison Road in Petersham just after 5am on Monday.

More than 30 firefighters responded to the fire, superintendent Paul Johnstone said.

Initial reports suggested one person was unaccounted for but all residents have been found, he said.

"Nine people were living there, but they all self-evacuated," Supt Johnstone said.

The fire has been extinguished and emergency crews have started mopping up the site.

Forensic crews and police have started investigations into what caused the blaze.
