No AFL return for Eagle Darren Glass

West Coast will need to keep winning and rely on other results to fall their way if they are to reach this year's AFL finals.

Forget the rumblings - West Coast great Darren Glass is not planning on coming out of retirement.

Whispers have been circulating that Glass had started training again just in case the injury-hit Eagles needed him to play in the run home.

West Coast have already lost Sharrod Wellingham, Matt Rosa, Brad Sheppard and Beau Waters for the season, while Scott Selwood, Elliot Yeo and Xavier Ellis are others who may not play again this year.

But ruckman Dean Cox, who himself will retire at the end of the season, said his mate wasn't planning a return.

"I haven't seen him train," Cox said with a chuckle when asked about Glass, who retired in June citing ankle and hip issues.

"I think he's playing social basketball somewhere with a few of the coaches; working on his box out and post moves."

West Coast's defence have stood up admirably since Glass' retirement, with Eric Mackenzie, Will Schofield, Mitch Brown, Shannon Hurn, Jeremy McGovern and Sam Butler forming a tight unit.

Butler is still hoping to front up against Melbourne at Patersons Stadium on Saturday night despite undergoing minor surgery on his eye earlier this week.

Amazingly, the 12th-placed Eagles are still a chance to make the finals despite last week's heartbreaking three-point loss to Essendon.

West Coast need to beat Melbourne and Gold Coast in the run home, plus rely on other results to fall their way, in order to sneak into eighth.
