No AFL tribunal as players criticise fines

Melbourne veteran Jordan Lewis is one of 12 AFL players out of pocket following incidents during round 16.

The AFL tribunal will not sit on Tuesday night with a dozen AFL players accepting fines for incidents during round 16.

Melbourne's Jordan Lewis took his medicine but would surely have been tempted to challenge his $2000 fine for striking Fremantle's Michael Walters.

The oft-sanctioned Lewis bumped Walters off the ball during Saturday night's game in Darwin but many questioned whether the impact was sufficient to warrant a charge.

AFL stars Patrick Dangerfield and Nathan Jones on Monday criticised the AFL for handing down too many fines for trivial matters this season.

Under the AFL's new match review guidelines, players who are offered a fine no longer risk being suspended if they challenge their sanction at the tribunal.

Adelaide skipper Taylor Walker last week successfully challenged his $1500 fine for misconduct on West Coast midfielder Luke Shuey.

Gold Coast co-captain Steven May was lucky to escape suspension for the gut punch that collected North Melbourne star Shaun Higgins on Sunday.

May copped a $2000 fine for the incident, which incurred the wrath of coach Stuart Dew, while May's teammate Alex Sexton was charged with misconduct and fined $1500 for an incident where he also hit Higgins behind play.

Brisbane captain Dayne Zorko was fined $2000 for his contact to the eye of Carlton counterpart Marc Murphy, as was Port Adelaide's Lindsay Thomas for rough conduct.

Port veteran Brad Ebert, Hawthorn defender Blake Hardwick, Melbourne key forward Jesse Hogan and Demons co-captain Jones accepted fines for misconduct charges.

Brisbane's Rhys Mathieson, St Kilda forward Jade Gresham and North Melbourne midfielder Ben Cunnington are out of pocket for umpire contact.
