The man accused of raping and murdering teen beauty queen Bronwynne Richardson will remain behind bars after his case was mentioned in a Sydney court.
Colin Michael Newey did not come up from the cells at Central Local Court on Friday and did not apply for bail.
"Given the nature of the charge, bail is refused," Magistrate Les Mabbutt said.
Newey is next due to face Albury Local Court in October.
The 61-year-old has already spent one night behind bars after he was extradited from South Australia on Thursday - more than 40 years after Ms Richardson's death.
Police say the 17-year-old was snatched outside a Coles supermarket in Albury on the NSW/Victorian border on a Friday night in October 1973.
She had just finished her shift and was waiting for a lift home when she was allegedly abducted.
Police will allege the teenager was dragged into a car, driven six kilometres and sexually assaulted before she was strangled and drowned in the Murray River.
Her body was found in a nearby lagoon two days later.
It is the oldest unsolved murder case in NSW to result in an arrest.
Court papers reveal that along with rape and murder charges, it's alleged Newey "did by force take away Bronwynne Ann Richardson with intent to carnally know her".
Ms Richardson's father Stanley, who has cancer, described her as a "wonderful, beautiful girl" and thanked police for not giving up.
"I'm more than grateful to be able to say thank you very much," he told Network Ten.
Sister Fiona Nash also praised authorities for charging Newey.
"We're just very, very grateful that after all this time that we weren't forgotten and she wasn't forgotten."
