The prime minister says there is no point in calling an election when the parliament is performing so well.

Tony Abbott says rumours of an early election are unfounded.

Visiting marginal seats on the NSW Central Coast on Thursday, the prime minister said the government had just completed its most productive fortnight of parliament sittings in the entire term - passing small business tax cuts and pension measures.

"Why would you close it down just when it's starting to perform," Mr Abbott told reporters.
