Treasurer Joe Hockey has dismissed suggestions the government will go to the polls early next year to avoid handing down another budget.

Asked on Sky News on Monday whether such talk is hot air, Mr Hockey said: "Yeah."

Mr Hockey is due to hand down his third budget next May, while an election is about 12 months away if the government goes full term.
