The US House of Representatives will now not vote on a bill to raise the debt ceiling, taking the crisis within hours of a crucial deadline, Republican party officials say.

House leaders on Tuesday shelved plans for a bill that also sought to rein in President Barack Obama's health care law after apparently failing to win sufficient support from Tea Party conservatives.

The bill was to be voted on on Tuesday night.
