No Lowndes replacement for Supercars team

A replacement for Craig Lowndes won't be sought by Red Bull Racing after the Supercars heavyweights confirmed they would only run two cars in 2019.

Leading Supercars team Red Bull Racing have confirmed they will not field a third car next season following Holden great Craig Lowndes' retirement.

Nissan's Simona de Silvestro had been tipped to replace Lowndes after his 2018 swansong but RBR ended months of speculation by announcing they would only run two cars in 2019.

RBR boss Roland Dane said the contract for their third vehicle was up for sale.

"I said we would look at keeping it if there was something sensible," Dane told motoring.com.au.

"But there was nothing else that stacked up and that fitted into the ... business plan.

"We only went to three cars to accommodate Craig so it's logical to go back to two."

RBR will next year stick with running their two superstars - seven-time series champion Jamie Whincup and series leader Shane van Gisbergen - who are off contract next year.

Dane had been tightlipped about their third car's future since 44-year-old Lowndes' confirmation in July that the 2018 season would be his last.

Three-time series champion Lowndes is vying for his seventh Mount Panorama victory in next weekend's Bathurst 1000.

Kostecki Brothers Racing is tipped to vie for RBR's licence after being handed wildcards for rounds at Ipswich and The Bend, outside Adelaide this year.
