No need for further Monis inquiry: PM

Tony Abbott says there's nothing more to explain about a letter from Sydney siege gunman Man Haron Monis to the government.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott says parliament is not owed any further explanation on how Sydney siege gunman Man Haron Monis slipped through the system.

The government initially said a pre-siege letter from Monis to the Attorney-General's Department had been assessed by a high-level review but later clarified that it had not, due to an "administrative error".

Asked whether a Senate committee should be allowed to reconsider the matter, Mr Abbott told reporters in Melbourne on Friday: "The Labor Party can hyperventilate all it likes but we have explained it in detail."
