No pay rise for WA members of parliament

The Salaries and Allowances Tribunal has frozen the wages of WA MPs, members of the judiciary and senior public servants.

West Australian MPs won't get a pay rise this year in light of significant challenges facing the state economy.

Wages will also be frozen for the state judiciary and senior public servants, the Salaries and Allowances Tribunal has determined.

The Tribunal says it considers it appropriate for salaries for senior public offices to be held at current levels.

It noted the state government's policy to retrain public sector wage increases to the inflation rate and projections that 6.25 per cent of West Australians will be unemployed by 2015-16 - the highest level in more than a decade.

"The challenging economic environment is apparent throughout the state," the Tribunal said.

"There have been significant numbers of redundancies in the mining sector, pay freezes and pay cuts in the private sector and public sector budget constraints and efficiency measures."

The Tribunal has changed accommodation allowances for MPs, which were previously limited to travel within their own electorate and immediate adjacent electorates.

A base accommodation allowance will enhance their capacity to travel around WA, with numbers of nights set according to the region or district a member represents.

The Tribunal has also adjusted the resettlement entitlement, which aims to assist former MPs to transition from public office.

It was established in 2011 to apply to MPs elected after 2000, who can't access pension arrangements, and can provide for professional advice, educational or training costs, or any other costs considered appropriate.
