The chief of staff of ousted prime minister Tony Abbott says the week after the Liberals leadership coup has been tough, but she's taking time to "breathe" and is looking forward to the next challenge.

"I am not going to run for politics, it's been said about me for 16 years.

I want to move on with my life and do something where I get my own voice," she said on Tuesday while on a panel at the Australian Women's Weekly Women of the Future awards, aired by Australia's Public Affairs Channel.
