No power for week in Qld cyclone areas

The CEO of Ergon says power may not be restored to some residents affected by Cyclone Marcia until next week.

Some residents affected by Cyclone Marcia may not have power restored for another week, the head of Ergon has warned.

About 69,500 premises lost power when the cyclone tore through central Queensland late last week.

Power has been restored to only about one quarter of those homes and businesses.

Ergon chief executive Ian McLeod said most premises in urban areas should be back on the grid by Thursday, but that some residents may be waiting until next week.

"We expect to have all customers back on, that can be connected, by Tuesday of next week," he told ABC Radio.

Mr McLeod said efforts to restore power quickly were being delayed because some properties were difficult to access because of storm damage.

He said Ergon was using helicopters and a special computer modelling program to determine where the grid was down, and how the required repair equipment could be delivered and installed.

He said the time frame to complete repairs would be much shorter than with previous big cyclones.

"(Cyclone) Yasi took 23 days start to finish ... and Cyclone Larry took 28 days," he said.

"We expect to have this recovery completed in around 12 days."
