No room in Raiders side for Ferguson

Blake Ferguson will miss the Raiders' clash with defending NRL champions Melbourne in Canberra.

Defending champions Melbourne can breathe a sigh of relief with game-breaking Blake Ferguson left out of the Raiders' side for their NRL clash in Canberra on Sunday.

The Storm were preparing for Ferguson to make a return from his month-long NRL-imposed suspension at Canberra Stadium despite not being named in the Raiders' squad.

Ferguson terrorised Melbourne in their round eight clash, scoring two tries and booting four conversions in his side's 24-20 victory at AAMI Park, which was the launch pad for his NSW Origin selection.

While reluctant to change a winning side, Canberra coach David Furner said the 23-year-old outside back needed another week with the Raiders' feeder team to work on his fitness.

Ferguson was cleared to return to playing duties last week after completing an alcohol rehabilitation program following a series of off-field incidents.

"There's some areas he needs to work on," Furner said.

"We know he can play it's about match fitness.

"He said to me last week he knows that he's underdone."

Furner said Ferguson could return for their clash with the red-hot Sydney Roosters next Saturday.

Despite winning their last 12 at home and their last three, Furner said his team would need an improved showing to knock over Melbourne.

The Storm have lost four out of their last five but Furner didn't think they were travelling too badly.

"I thought last week they were probably a little bit unlucky against the Warriors and they missed an opportunity to win the game.

"I know our team won't underestimate what they're up against.

"I still think they're one of the benchmark teams, we need to play our best football."
