No rules on parliament drone flights

The aviation watchdog says it has not been asked to provide rules on restricting drone flights over Parliament House in Canberra.

Liberal and Labor senators on Friday asked officials from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority what would prevent someone flying a camera-bearing drone over new security works at Parliament House.

CASA's Dr Jonathan Aleck told a Senate hearing it was a matter for the attorney-general's department if it wanted to make a case for a direction on security grounds.

"Someone has to come to us to ask for a direction to be made," he said.

The committee heard security matters at Parliament House were decided by the Speaker and the Senate President.

Liberal frontbencher Anne Ruston said she would take it up with the attorney-general.

Drone use has previously been approved for the ABC documentary series, The House, but that came after lengthy talks with CASA, the Department of Parliamentary Services and the Australian Federal Police.

CASA earlier last week released revised regulations on recreational drone flight ahead of a more comprehensive review of the rules.

The rules include a maximum ceiling of 400 feet on recreational drones, and craft must remain more than 30 metres from people not involved in controlling the drone.

Only one recreational drone may be flown at one time and they must be kept away from emergency operations unless there is approval from the operation chief.
