No same-sex marriage ballot: committee

A Senate committee has recommended a bill to allow same-sex marriage be introduced urgently and advised against a public vote on the issue.

A parliamentary committee has advised against a national vote on same-sex marriage, saying it's a matter for the parliament.

The Senate legal and constitutional affairs references committee recommended a bill to amend the definition of marriage be introduced urgently and that all politicians be granted a free vote.

Labor believes a national vote is unnecessary and the Greens are concerned about potential harm to children of same-sex parents from a campaign against the change which could precede a national vote.
