No widespread player betting abuse: NRL

Initial investigations by the NRL Integrity Unit have found no evidence of widespread player involvement in betting on matches.

The NRL says it has found no evidence of widespread involvement of players in betting on matches.

In initial investigations into possible code of conduct breaches, NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle on Saturday said the Integrity Unit had audited the betting records of registered players from the premiership and second-tier competitions.

He said inquiries suggested there were less than eight players who might face penalties for breaches, but this was yet to be confirmed. In most cases under review, the bets were small - often as little as $5.

"Let me be clear that there is no suggestion of widespread abuse of betting rules or inappropriate conduct on the field related to betting," Doyle said.

"The Integrity Unit is looking into whether a small number of players have breached the code of conduct by placing small bets on rugby league games against our rules.

"If so, we will take appropriate action, which may include suspensions, to protect the interests of all players, fans and members."

Doyle said the Integrity Unit would conclude its investigation before commenting further.

According to The Weekend Australian, findings were laid out to several clubs on Friday, with a number of players to face sanctions.

The newspaper reported on Saturday it was unclear how many clubs or players were involved, but that the investigation had involved multiple players and teams.

NRL rules forbid any player, manager, club employee or game official taking part in gambling in relation to rugby league.
