Nordqvist wins Evian in playoff, Kirk 3rd

Katherine Kirk has fallen just short at the Evian Championship in France and is still chasing a first major title.

Anna Nordqvist beat unheralded American Brittany Altomare in a playoff under driving rain and hail at the first extra hole to win the Evian Championship.

Australia's Katherine Kirk and New Zealander Lydia Ko were tied for third with Moriya Jutanugarn, one shot back at eight-under.

Nordqvist sank a four-foot putt for bogey 5 on the soaked 18th hole while 102nd-ranked Altomare had a six.

The 30-year-old Swede earned $547,500 for winning her first major since the 2009 LPGA Championship.

Nordqvist and Altomare both shot five-under-par 66 in their final round for 9-under totals of 204. It was a 54-hole event after weather-affected play Thursday was scrapped.

Kirk at one stage got it to nine-under but bogeys at the 16th and 17th holes cost her dearly as she dropped back to seven-under before making birdie at 18.

Both Ko and Jutanugarn appeared set to also be in the playoff but each made bogey at the 18th to miss out.
