Norfolk Island Speaker to lobby Canberra

Norfolk Island Speaker David Buffet will present parliament's leaders with a remonstrance motion that calls for the continuation of self-government.

The Speaker of Norfolk Island's parliament has travelled to Canberra in a last-ditch attempt to stave off moves to end self-government.

David Buffett will present a remonstrance motion from the island's legislative assembly to the Speaker of the commonwealth parliament and president of the Senate on Monday.

The motion calls on Prime Minister Tony Abbott to confer on the people of Norfolk Island the right to freely determine their political status, and their economic, social and cultural development.
