Gold miner Northern Star has easily beaten its quarterly production target following a string of acquisitions.

The company mined 127,236 ounces of gold during the quarter and extracted 114,780 ounces, well up from the 80,000 to 90,000 ounces the company had forecast.

Meanwhile, Northern Star sold a record 115,820 ounces during the quarter, while the company's production costs averaged $1,032 an ounce, below the $1,100 an ounce it had forecast.

And the company expects to produce between 550,000 and 600,000 ounces of gold at between $1,050 and $1,100 an ounce during the 2014/15 financial year.

Northern Star is now Australia's second largest gold miner after purchasing a number of mines in the past year.

The company's latest acquisition, Jundee, produced an additional 75,000 ounces of gold during the June quarter but was not transferred to Northern Star's ownership until July 1 and was not included in the quarterly result.

Northern Star shares were down 8.5 cents, or almost five per cent, to $1.69 as 1115 AEST.
