Senior Liberal Eric Abetz has denied telling a coalition partyroom meeting that gay men don't want to get married.

Senator Abetz was labelled a clown by Opposition Leader Bill Shorten, over reports the cabinet minister told the six-hour discussion on same-sex marriage that many gay men didn't want to marry, citing fashion designers Dolce and Gabbana as an example.

Senator Abetz on Wednesday said that not all members of the gay community held the same view on the question of same-sex marriage, a point he has made publicly before.
